Background of the study
Environmental pollution is a growing public health concern, particularly in rapidly industrializing areas such as Eleme Local Government Area. Exposure to pollutants—from industrial effluents to vehicular emissions—has been linked to adverse health outcomes, including disruptions in physical growth patterns among children (Ibe, 2023). The developmental stages of children are highly sensitive to environmental conditions, with pollutants affecting nutritional absorption, respiratory function, and overall physical development. Studies in similar contexts have shown that chronic exposure to environmental toxins can result in stunted growth, compromised immune systems, and other health challenges (Chukwuemeka, 2024). This study explores the correlation between environmental pollution and physical growth patterns among children in Eleme, seeking to uncover the extent to which pollutants influence growth metrics. The research also aims to assess community awareness and the effectiveness of existing pollution control measures, thereby providing data critical for public health interventions (Akanbi, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Environmental pollution in Eleme Local Government Area has raised significant concerns regarding its impact on the physical growth of children. The persistent exposure to industrial and vehicular pollutants is suspected to disrupt normal developmental processes, leading to measurable deviations in growth patterns. This study aims to investigate the specific ways in which pollution adversely affects children's physical development and to identify potential public health interventions. Addressing these issues is critical to ensuring healthier growth outcomes for future generations (Ibe, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the impact of environmental pollution on children’s physical growth.

  2. To identify specific pollutants affecting growth patterns.

  3. To propose public health interventions to mitigate these effects.

Research questions

  1. How does environmental pollution affect physical growth in children?

  2. Which pollutants are most detrimental to child growth?

  3. What measures can reduce the negative impact of pollution on children’s development?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Environmental pollution significantly impairs physical growth patterns in children.

  2. Specific industrial pollutants are strongly correlated with growth retardation.

  3. Public health interventions can mitigate the adverse effects of pollution on growth.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides vital insights into the relationship between environmental pollution and child development. Its findings will inform public health strategies and policy decisions aimed at reducing pollutant exposure and promoting healthier growth patterns among children in Eleme (Chukwuemeka, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to assessing the impact of environmental pollution on the physical growth patterns of children in Eleme Local Government Area and does not extend to other health parameters or regions.

Definitions of terms

  1. Environmental pollution: The presence of harmful substances in the environment.

  2. Physical growth patterns: Observable changes in children’s height, weight, and overall development.

  3. Public health interventions: Strategies designed to improve health outcomes within a community.
